Nominator Spotlight – Melissa Martz

Melissa Martz has nominated two women for K-W Oktoberfest Rogers Women of the Year. She is passionate about having recognition given to deserving individuals from the community and puts every effort into the nomination process. Melissa was very kind to share with us some thoughts about her experience as a nominator.

You mentioned that you have been nominating women for several years. How long have you been doing this?
I have nominated several individuals for various awards – approximately 10 – but for the K-W Oktoberfest Rogers Woman of the Year award, it’s been two consecutive years now.

How long does it take you to fill out a nomination?
The time to fill out a nomination depends on how much you already know about your nominee. You may need to research and gather information about your nominee, ask for letters of support and then put all this together before filling out the nomination form. It can be a lot of work and so you have to be willing to do the work, but it is so rewarding!

Have you nominated women in various categories?
My nominations thus far have only been in the Professional category.

How do you decide who to nominate each year?
I follow my intuition. I just know the person is worthy of, and would benefit from the recognition.

Are the women you nominate people you know personally or people you’ve heard about through others?
I personally know these women.

Why do you do this? What inspired you and what continues to inspire you?
It’s become one of my favourite things, to nominate others for awards and honours. I enjoy the process, and hearing the encouragement when asking others for a support letter.

Have you ever been nominated yourself?
No, I have not been nominated.

Do you or have you attended the celebration?
Yes, I went to the celebration in 2014 and I plan to again this year.

What do you think of the event?
I enjoyed being at a table of supporters for my nominee. I loved listening to what all the other nominees were accomplishing as well.

Have any of the people you’ve nominated for Women of the Year ever won? Tell us about that experience.
Yes, my first nominee won last year. It was a wonderful feeling that she received the award and was recognized for how her efforts have made their organization, as well as Waterloo Region, better.

Why do you think others should get involved in nominating women from our community?
It’s a great feeling when all the hard work you put in writing the nomination turns into a winning nomination.
